Smart Revelry

Updated: Aug 7

Beware of hangovers that can last longer than the "morning after."

The Resolution Reality Check

January is often when many women realize their healthy New Year's resolutions need a reality check. Whether your goal is to lose weight, feel stronger, or just fit back into your favorite jeans, now is the perfect time to create a realistic wellness plan for women over 35. If you live in Toronto, working with a personal fitness coach in your own home can be the key to staying on track.

Outshining the Health-Conscious Crowd

Some people welcome the New Year feeling quite satisfied with their physical health. You may know a few of them and might imagine that their way of celebrating involves toasting with celery sticks or tossing handfuls of quinoa into the air at midnight. However, there's a way for you to outshine them: embrace Smart Revelry. A concept built on a holistic fitness approach—one that includes movement, mindset, and nutrition—so you can shine brighter than anyone sipping sugar-free cocktails.

What Is Smart Revelry?

On New Year's Eve, you can have a great time without consuming calories that you'll later need to burn off to stick to your resolutions. While the health-conscious crowd may clink their celery sticks, toss quinoa, and bob for tofu while sipping their diet water with sugar-free ice cubes, you can still enjoy yourself wisely. Smart Revelry is a way to enjoy the New Year while still aligning with your post-holiday wellness goals. It is perfect for women who want to feel great without giving up fun.

A Game Plan for the Party Table

First, be mindful of the crab puffs, chips, queso dip, cheese and cracker platters, and rumaki. Remember, moderation is key!

You want to enjoy yourself without consuming too many calories, but it’s also a good idea to have a little something in your stomach before you dive into the nightlife. As a fitness coach for women 40+ in Toronto, I recommend my clients prepare with healthy pre-party snacks at home to avoid overindulging later. Smart Revelry lets you have as much fun as anyone else—dancing, chatting, and collecting phone numbers—without the worry of ending your night face down in a flower bed.

Beware of Liquid Calories

The key to Smart Revelry is managing your caloric intake from both food and beverages. Alcohol (ethanol) naturally contains sugar (glucose), which is produced during the fermentation process. The calories from this sugar can be stored in the body as fat, making it challenging to stick to your healthy resolutions for 2025.

You can still enjoy a drink while keeping your calorie intake in check. Different types of alcoholic beverages—such as spirits, beer, and wine—vary in their alcohol content and sugar levels. Here is a guide to help you make smarter choices while indulging, based on research:

Beer:

Regular (serving size 12 fl oz) contains approximately 153 calories. Light (serving size 12 fl oz) contains approximately 103 calories.

Note: While Light has fewer calories than Regular, it still has a high caloric content.

**Spirits - 80% Proof**

The average calorie content for a 1.5 fl oz serving of spirits like rum, gin, tequila, and vodka is approximately 97 calories, with vodka containing about 67 calories.

Note:  that these drinks often require high-sugar mixers, such as fruit juices. For a healthier option, consider using low or no-calorie mixers like lemon or lime juice or light cranberry juice.

Wine

Red wine (serving size: 5 fl oz) contains approximately 125 calories. White wine (serving size: 5 fl oz) has about 121 calories. Champagne (serving size: 4 fl oz) has around 84 calories.

Note: Drier wine varieties tend to have fewer calories, according to the Wine Rack.

Cocktail

A Martini, with a serving size of 2.5 fl oz, contains approximately 127 calories. A Daiquiri, which has a serving size of 2 fl oz, has around 112 calories.

Note: while the caloric content of some cocktails may be low, they often contain salt, which can increase your thirst and potentially lead to higher caloric consumption.

Drink Smart: Low-Calorie Alcohol Choices and Hangover Hacks for 2025

It's better to avoid mixing alcoholic beverages with fruit juices or carbonated drinks because they often contain high sugar levels. Instead, drink alcohol on the rocks or with soda or tonic water.

Alternate between alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages when drinking. Dilute your drinks with water or light mixers to minimize the risk of a hangover.

Mix and blend your drinks. My favorite concoction is coconut water with squeezed lime and lemon, light cranberry juice, four sweet green grapes, and a pinch of salt.

In moderation, some alcoholic beverages may offer health benefits, such as red wine. However, the effects of tequila body shots remain unclear.

One way to monitor your caloric intake — your alcohol consumption is your choice — is to sip on vodka mixed with diet tonic water. Unflavored vodka is essentially just ethanol and water, containing about 67 calories per serving.

When you mix it with diet tonic, which has zero calories, you create a drink that's very low in calories. To match the calorie content of a Tim Horton's Tuscan Chicken Panini with a side of kettle chips, you would need to consume ten of these vodka and diet tonic drinks (although drinking that much is not recommended).

Keeping track of calories while enjoying a party can help you limit your alcohol intake and ensure you start 2025 without suffering from a long-lasting hangover. If you end up consuming too much alcohol, smart partygoers understand the importance of getting a safe ride home. After all, the food in jail isn't exactly conducive to maintaining a healthy weight.
